“Angela can navigate through the system of care because she is a parent of a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).  After years of listening to other parents and professionals and gaining their knowledge she helped create a program that crossed home, school, and community for Tristan. However when Angela doesn’t have the answers or knowledge, she taps her network of professionals, parents, and individuals with ASD to find the solutions.

Angela has experience working with groups of parents and asking the right questions that allow parents to feel comfortable to open up and tell their experiences.  As someone placed in the position of telling parents something they would rather not hear, “their child has autism”, it is wonderful to have a resource like Angela, her website, blog, DVDs, and workshops to which I can refer parents.  Angela has a wealth of knowledge, both detailed and practical to assist families with a diverse group of challenges.  Mostly however I enjoy and recommend Angela’s practical advice about just being parents first, and preserving family time and activities, despite the challenges of raising a child with autism.”

I attended Angela’s Build Your Family workshop last week and was amazed! She offered years of experience in such a short amount of time! (I do not consider six hours with an experienced resource enough time to absorb all that they know!) There were many important messages she conveyed and two in particular have remained at the top of my list.

The first: Make every attempt to remain calm and kind throughout the IEP process while effectively advocating for your child.

The second: Even though you have a child with special needs, there are other family members that need your love, attention and support and together you must strive to keep those lines of communication open! Need I say more? Attend the next workshop if you can! ~Laurie

A New Appreciation for Parents

A New Appreciation for Parents

“A new appreciation for how difficult this can be for parents… Refreshing! (Angela’s) presentation was energetic, she’s clearly passionate with care for children with autism and she conveyed that passion well. Very interesting and compelling first person perspective.”

“Angela’s presentation was so very well-rounded! She explored many areas of Autism including diagnosis, the IEP process, therapies and how to maintain focus on the whole family. I was very impressed by the information and suggestions she offered and was even able to incorporate a family meeting into our weekend routine. The lines of communication are now open at our house! Thanks so much Angela!”
